On Saturday, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi inaugurated the 17th annual Agricultural Week, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture in the capital, Baghdad.
The session was launched with the attendance of the Ministers of Agriculture, Trade, Education, Water Resources and Environment, along with a number of officials, specialists and representatives of companies and institutions working in the agricultural sector.
During the opening, Al-Zaydi stressed the importance of developing the agricultural sector and raising the level of local production, which would enhance food security and expand agriculture’s contribution to the national economy. He emphasized the need to support farmers, provide a suitable environment for agricultural investment, and encourage the adoption of modern technologies to increase production and improve its quality.
He pointed out that “the government will take a number of initiatives and steps to support the agricultural sector,” explaining that “Iraq’s land is rich in its resources, represented by oil and minerals underground, and agriculture on its surface, and we are working to invest these resources in a way that achieves comprehensive development.”
The Prime Minister explained that the government’s interest in the agricultural sector comes within its economic and development vision, to provide job opportunities, stimulate the local economy, reduce dependence on imports, and achieve balanced and sustainable development in the various governorates.
Al-Zaydi toured the exhibition pavilions held as part of the events, and reviewed the agricultural technologies and supplies on display, as well as modern irrigation projects and agricultural mechanization.
This session includes 14 countries and more than 200 Iraqi, Arab and foreign companies specializing in showcasing their products and modern solutions in the fields of plant and animal production and agricultural technologies.
