Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi announced on Wednesday (June 24, 2026) that the relationship with the United States will shift from a military one to an economic partnership.
Al-Zaidi is scheduled to visit Washington in mid-July and meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House.
Al-Zaydi said in a press statement that: “Most factions have already begun handing over their weapons to the state,” indicating that “after the withdrawal of all American forces, there will be no justification or need for any resistance in Iraq.”
He explained, “Fighting corruption is at the top of my priorities, and I have already started procedures in every ministry and department to dry up the sources of corruption.”
Al-Zaydi called on OPEC to increase Iraq’s oil production in line with its oil capabilities and population size.
It should be noted that Ali al-Zaidi’s government, since its formation in mid-May, has begun to restrict weapons to the state. Indeed, the Saraya al-Salam, Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq, and Kata’ib al-Imam Ali factions have announced their affiliation with the armed brigades belonging to them in the Popular Mobilization Forces and placed them at the disposal of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
It is worth noting that Al-Zaidi pledged in a speech after officially assuming his duties that he would work to protect public funds and combat corruption in all its forms, stressing that “corruption is no longer just an administrative flaw, but has become an obstacle to development and a delay to the progress of the state,” and he promised Iraqis to provide them with job opportunities away from favoritism and discrimination.
