Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi affirmed on Thursday that corruption is the most serious problem facing Iraq today, and that the government is waging a fierce battle to combat it and dry up its sources.
Al-Zaydi said, during his meeting with the head of the Parliamentary Integrity Committee, Taha Al-Difai, and members of the committee, according to a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, that “the state is based on two fundamental pillars: law and integrity,” stressing the importance of unifying efforts and strengthening cooperation and coordination between the legislative and executive authorities, in order to support anti-corruption measures and prosecute those involved in it.
He explained that corruption often begins with exaggerating project costs, and the government is working to adopt pre- and post-audit of government contracts, according to the principle that prevention is better than cure, to reduce waste and protect public funds, stressing the importance of the role played by the Parliamentary Integrity Committee in supporting the anti-corruption process, following up on its files, and working to end its manifestations and causes.
For their part, the chairman and members of the Parliamentary Integrity Committee, according to the statement, affirmed their continued support for efforts to combat corruption and prosecute corrupt individuals, noting the importance of passing the Internal Control Authority Law, which has been read for the first time in the House of Representatives.
They also stressed the need to review previous government contracts that are suspected of corruption or involve excessive costs, as well as the importance of state institutions responding quickly to the Integrity Commission’s requests to provide it with the necessary documents and information regarding priority contracts and files.
