Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi affirmed on Monday that the electricity file will receive “exceptional” attention. While calling on MPs to exercise their oversight role in supporting the government’s efforts to combat corruption and dry up its sources, he stressed that there are “no red lines” in pursuing corrupt individuals.
This came according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office, which was received by Shafaq News Agency, during Al-Zidi’s hosting of the Chairman and members of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, in the presence of the Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Central Bank of Iraq, to discuss financial and economic plans and policies, and coordination between the executive and legislative authorities regarding priority files.
Al-Zaydi stressed the importance of the role of the House of Representatives and the Finance Committee in supporting the work of the government and its reform program, pointing to the heavy legacy it inherited of files and challenges, which it is working to address according to a clear vision, and that it has begun, for the first time, to prepare a program and performance budget, which represents a roadmap for Iraq’s economic future, to link government spending to goals and results and improve the efficiency of the use of public money.
He explained that the government is working on preparing a state-building strategy that includes building a new economic Iraq, corruption-free departments, and constitutional security institutions.
He pointed out that there is a strong desire and interest from major international companies to invest in Iraq, and that international financial institutions are ready to support it economically, stressing the work to provide the appropriate environment to attract investments and revitalize the various economic sectors.
The Prime Minister directed the preparation of a schedule for hosting and periodic meetings with parliamentary committees, in order to enhance coordination and institutional communication between the government and the House of Representatives.
For his part, the head of the parliamentary finance committee affirmed his absolute support for the government. Members of the committee also put forward a number of proposals to legislate the necessary laws to activate non-oil economic activities, support the government’s efforts in economic reform and combating corruption, as well as stressing the importance of proceeding with the implementation of oil projects, paying attention to the investment environment and attracting reputable international companies, in a way that contributes to driving the wheel of development, encouraging industry and creating job opportunities.
Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi had launched a campaign of arrests of a number of MPs and government officials involved in financial corruption cases, which he called “Dawn of Sunday” and “Dawn Charge,” because the first operations took place at dawn on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
The operation at the time included the issuance of arrest warrants, summonses, and investigations targeting dozens of prominent officials and politicians, including former and current members of parliament, officials, and businessmen, on charges related to wasting public funds and illicit gains.
