An informed source revealed on Sunday that Judge Munir Haddad has been appointed as legal advisor to Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi.
For his part, the head of the Kurdish Faili bloc in the Iraqi parliament, MP Haider al-Faili “Abu Tara”, congratulated Judge Haddad on the occasion of his assumption of the duties of legal advisor to al-Zaidi.
In an official statement, Abu Tara expressed his wishes for success in Judge Haddad’s national duties, given his distinguished legal and judicial experience, which contributes to consolidating the rule of law and supporting the process of building the state and its institutions.
Judge Munir Haddad’s name emerged as one of the members of the Iraqi High Criminal Court, which was formed to try the pillars of the former regime. He served as the head of the Court of Cassation and worked as the court’s deputy head.
Haddad is one of the most prominent judicial figures who directly supervised the execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in late 2006. He was the judicial official who read the death sentence and legal regulations in the execution hall, and he documented his testimony on those historic moments in many interviews and official documentations.
Judge Haddad belongs to the Fayli Kurdish community and has a long history of legal and human rights work. He was a prominent defender of the rights of the community and of ensuring their representation and fairness as a result of the displacement and repressive policies they were subjected to in previous decades.
After his work at the Supreme Criminal Court ended, Haddad continued as an independent legal figure providing constitutional and legal advice and readings on the Iraqi political scene through the media and research centers, before he was recently chosen as a legal advisor to Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi.
