On Wednesday, Abdul Samad al-Zarkoushi, a member of the Coordination Framework, confirmed that there are no indications that Nouri al-Maliki will withdraw his candidacy to form the next government. He also indicated that the Framework’s meeting will issue a clear statement on several issues.
Speaking to Al-Maalouma, al-Zarkoushi said, “What is being circulated about indications that Nouri al-Maliki might withdraw his candidacy for the premiership is inaccurate, and he has not issued any statement to that effect.” He pointed out that “al-Maliki remains the Coordination Framework’s candidate to form the next government.”
He added that “the Framework’s forces will hold an important meeting this evening to discuss several issues,” explaining that “the meeting may produce a clarifying statement outlining the features and nature of the next phase, particularly regarding the selection of the president, who will then task the candidate of the largest bloc with forming the government.”
