On Monday, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi discussed military cooperation and the development of Iraqi forces’ capabilities with delegations from Russia and Germany.
A statement from Al-Zaidi’s office, received by Shafaq News Agency, said that Al-Zaidi received the head of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Shugaev, and his accompanying delegation, in the presence of the Russian ambassador to Iraq.
He added that during the meeting, prospects for military cooperation between the two countries were discussed, as well as developing relations and joint cooperation through activating agreements and memoranda of understanding to support the capabilities of the Iraqi security forces in all their branches.
Al-Zaydi expressed Iraq’s pride in its bilateral relations with the Russian Federation, stressing the government’s commitment to developing cooperation in all fields and sectors, especially in light of the historical commonalities that unite the two friendly countries.
For his part, the head of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation of the Russian Federation affirmed his country’s commitment to developing bilateral relations with Iraq, reiterating Moscow’s desire to continue joint coordination to combat terrorism and enhance regional and international security.
In a separate meeting, Al-Zaidi received the commander of the German forces deployed outside Germany, Mr. Gunter Schneider, and his accompanying delegation.
During the meeting, bilateral relations between the two countries were discussed, as well as ways to strengthen and develop them in the military and security fields, through joint programs, in a way that contributes to developing the performance and efficiency of the Iraqi armed forces, according to a statement issued by Al-Zaidi’s office.
The statement confirmed that the meeting was about preparations for completing the withdrawal of the international coalition forces from Iraq, where His Excellency pointed to the importance of moving towards multi-directional relations with the coalition countries, and praised the German role that has continued for years in helping Iraq in its war against terrorism, especially during the period of confronting ISIS terrorist elements.
