Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, condemned on Sunday the targeting of the headquarters of the National Intelligence Service in the capital, Baghdad, describing the perpetrators as a “cowardly group,” while urging political forces to take a “clear and explicit” stance regarding the attacks targeting official institutions.
In press statements he made on the sidelines of his visit to the agency’s headquarters, Al-Sudani directed the relevant authorities in the intelligence service, in cooperation with other security agencies, to continue the thorough investigation into the circumstances of the “attack,” to reveal the results, and to announce to the public the party behind this “shameful terrorist” act, stressing the need to “not hesitate to expose it and bring it to justice.”
Al-Sudani said, “Those who committed this treacherous crime are a cowardly group who have shed Iraqi blood and violated state institutions,” explaining that “whoever dares to shed Iraqi blood does not represent Iraq, and no ideology justifies this crime. If there was an ideology behind the crime, it is undoubtedly distorted and destructive.”
Al-Sudani pointed out that “the government is acting according to the logic of wisdom and responsibility,” adding, “but it will not stand idly by in the face of the crime of shedding Iraqi blood and violating the country’s higher interests.”
On the political front, the Prime Minister called on Iraqi political forces to “play their role and take a clear and explicit stance regarding the attacks targeting the state and its institutions, and jeopardizing the country’s future.”
He continued, saying, “There are those who have given themselves the right to determine the decision of war and peace, but we emphasize that this decision belongs to the state alone, and it is the state that determines and protects the interests of Iraq.”
The National Intelligence Service announced on Saturday morning that the area surrounding its headquarters had been targeted by a “terrorist” attack carried out by outlaw elements, resulting in the death of one of its officers. It confirmed that security services had begun pursuing the perpetrators to bring them to justice.
