On Tuesday, outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani received Prime Minister-designate Ali Falih Kazem al-Zaidi in a meeting to discuss the overall situation in the country and the region.
The media office of Al-Sudani stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that the two sides stressed the need to strengthen unity among all national parties and to work in a spirit of responsibility and partnership to proceed with forming a government that represents all Iraqis and is characterized by efficiency and the ability to confront crises and challenges.
Al-Sudani stressed his keenness to support Al-Zidi in his mission to form the new government and to promote the principle of the peaceful transfer of power in accordance with constitutional and democratic mechanisms.
He pointed out that the current stage requires redoubled efforts from all parties to overcome the challenges, achieve the public interest, and establish stability throughout Iraq.
The ruling Shiite coalition forces in Iraq announced on Monday evening the nomination of al-Zaidi for the premiership, following the withdrawal of outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the State of Law Coalition, from the race for the position.
