The religious authority, Ali al-Sistani, predicted on Sunday that the crescent moon of Shawwal would be visible on the evening of Friday, the 30th of the blessed month of Ramadan, corresponding to March 20, 2026.
It is worth noting that Sistani’s office has set Thursday, February 19, 2026, as the date for the start of the month of Ramadan.
Earlier, Iraqi weather forecaster Sadiq Attia indicated that astronomical calculations show that it is impossible to see the crescent moon of Shawwal on March 18, while seeing it on the evening of March 19 will be very difficult in Iraq.
He indicated that the first day of Eid al-Fitr may be Friday, March 20, or Saturday, March 21, 2026, depending on the sighting of the new moon, and stressed that the official announcement of the Eid remains in the hands of the competent religious authorities.
