MP Ahmed Al-Sharmani called on Sunday for a comprehensive administrative and oversight overhaul to liberate the investment sector from the grip of influential figures and economic committees affiliated with certain political parties. He emphasized that the subordination of development projects to narrow interests has become the biggest obstacle to the country’s economic recovery.
In a statement to the Information Agency, Al-Sharmani said, “The investment environment in Iraq remains shackled by the dominance of influential entities that practice extortion and obstruction against reputable companies and vital projects.” He explained that “the interference of political parties in the distribution of opportunities and projects, and the prioritization of quotas and commissions, has paralyzed reconstruction efforts and caused the flight of genuine capital from the country.”
He added, “Building a robust national economy and diversifying income sources cannot be achieved while this illegal control over investment bodies and institutions continues.” He pointed out that “the current stage requires taking courageous and decisive decisions to dismantle networks of narrow interests and provide a legal and security umbrella that guarantees equal opportunities and encourages efficient international and local companies.”
Al-Sharmani stressed “the necessity for the government and oversight bodies, foremost among them the Integrity Commission and the Public Prosecution, to open this sensitive file and hold accountable those involved in obstructing the development process,” noting that “liberating investment from the hands of influential figures is a fundamental step to address the unemployment crisis, stimulate the local market, and stop the hemorrhage of financial waste.”
