Member of Parliament Ahmed al-Shammari called on the incoming government Tuesday to implement an administrative overhaul to reduce the number of advisors in the presidencies and ministries, while also streamlining spending on foreign delegations, describing them as the biggest drain on the operational budget.
Al-Shammari told the Information Agency, “The Iraqi state burdens its annual budget with enormous sums of money spent on salaries and benefits for a huge number of advisors and experts in the presidencies, ministries, and public bodies, without any real benefit.”
He added, “Reducing expenditures must be a top priority for the next government, by eliminating unnecessary contracts and reducing this army of advisors,” stressing that “financial reform must extend to include streamlining spending on foreign delegations, which consume huge sums without any real return for the country.”
These calls coincide with the Prime Minister’s Media Office’s announcement Monday of the commencement of procedures to terminate the contracts of a group of advisors and experts as part of a national plan to “reduce expenditures” and protect public funds.
