Muthanna al-Samarrai, head of the “Al-Azm” coalition, announced on Monday his withdrawal from the race for the position of Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament.

Al-Samarrai said in a speech he delivered inside the council that the decision to withdraw came in response to the wishes of the coordinating framework (which includes Shiite political forces and blocs) and the demands of the Sunni forces.

In turn, the oldest member of parliament, MP Amer Al-Fayez, closed the door to nominations for the position of Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, according to a brief statement received by Shafaq News Agency.

Al-Fayez added that the candidates for the presidency of the parliament are: MP Amer Abdul-Jabbar, MP Salem Al-Issawi, and MP Hebat Al-Halbousi.

The Iraqi parliament, in its sixth session, began earlier on Monday with the opening of its first parliamentary session, chaired by the oldest member, Amer Al-Fayez.

In a speech delivered during the opening session, Al-Fayez called on the new members of parliament to adhere to the constitutional timelines and to elect the Speaker of the House and his two deputies.

The session began after a quorum was reached with the attendance of 292 members of the council, according to a correspondent for Shafaq News Agency in Parliament.
