On Friday, the leader of the Shiite National Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, called for the “merging” of armed factions of various names under the name “Soldiers of Religious Rites” and linking them to the Hajj and Umrah Authority, stressing his readiness to dissolve the armed wings of his movement if this condition is implemented.
Al-Sadr said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, “Whoever is tasked with the premiership must transform the armed factions into a ‘religious rites’ formation, regardless of their orientations, and under the authority of the Hajj and Umrah Authority… or into a humanitarian formation for relief and humanitarian aid. Whoever refuses will be considered an outlaw.”
He added, “If they do, I am ready to dissolve the Promised Day Brigade and hand over the Peace Brigades to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, as everyone should do as quickly as possible.”
He stressed the need to avoid using the “perfumer’s mix” in forming the cabinet and to completely exclude anyone with an armed wing from it, and to form a government that meets the demands of the people.
Al-Sadr stressed the need to “suppress corruption within a maximum period of ninety days… starting with the Deal of the Century and its perpetrators and all its consequences,” calling for strengthening foreign relations “within frameworks that give Iraq its prestige and openness to the Arab, Islamic and international side without interference from all parties and without transgressing against anyone, for in that is an elevation for Iraq, religion and sect, and indeed the people who have been burned by the fires of wars.”
Al-Sadr concluded by saying: “We do not accept the presence of any individual from the national Shiite movement in the cabinet… and none of their ministers represent us.”
