On Friday, Shiite nationalist leader Muqtada al-Sadr called for a campaign to support Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zubaidi in combating corruption, while asserting that the campaign had frightened many.
In a unified sermon in Baghdad and the provinces, attended by correspondents from Shafaq News Agency, Al-Sadr said: “We were and still are advocates of reform, and we have nothing in common with the corrupt, not even love for Hussein.”
He held those he called “corrupt” fully responsible for the lives of the reformers, al-Zaydi, and “all advocates of reform who rise up to restore the nation’s prestige.”
Al-Sadr pointed to the need to support the new reform campaign whose “light has begun to shine in Iraq”.
The leader of the Shiite National Movement called on his supporters to hold a “peaceful stand in support of reform and (the soldier of reform) Ali al-Zaidi, and to strengthen his resolve to put pressure on the corrupt individuals who are trying to influence him after the campaign of raids that terrified many inside and outside,” according to him.
Al-Sadr expressed his gratitude to “everyone who helped Al-Zaidi, such as the Iraqi judiciary, the Speaker of Parliament, and the security forces.”
Friday prayers, sermons, and a rally called for by al-Sadr were held in Baghdad and a number of provinces.
The participants raised slogans in support of reform, affirming their “support and encouragement for the continuation of the reform campaign led by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi,” and demanding the continuation of measures aimed at combating “corruption” and strengthening state institutions.
