On Monday, Shiite nationalist leader Muqtada al-Sadr praised the campaign to arrest those accused of corruption led by Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi, describing it as a “heroic reform campaign,” while calling on “Friday imams” to organize a peaceful stand in support of the campaign.
Al-Sadr said in a post, which was seen by Shafaq News Agency, that “what the brother Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi did in terms of arrests against corrupt individuals is a heroic reform campaign that we hope will continue.”
He added that this campaign “restored hope to the hearts of Iraqis after corrupt individuals had seized control of the people’s resources,” while praising the role of the Iraqi judiciary and security forces, especially the forces specializing in combating terrorism and corruption.
Al-Sadr called for a peaceful demonstration after next Friday’s prayer in support of the reform campaign, during which the banners of “the master of reform,” Imam Hussein, will be raised, along with Iraqi flags only, coinciding with the holy month of Muharram.
He concluded his post by saying: “May you be rewarded on our behalf and on behalf of the nation with the best of rewards.”
On Sunday morning, Baghdad and several other provinces witnessed a large-scale arrest campaign targeting political officials, members of parliament, and businessmen. It was described as one of the largest anti-corruption operations in years, targeting networks accused of wasting public funds and smuggling billions of dollars, amid indications that the investigations may extend to include high-ranking figures in the state.
During the cabinet meeting last night, Al-Zaydi confirmed that the campaign represents a “first phase” within the anti-corruption file. While pledging to continue procedures to recover public funds, he tasked the oversight bodies with receiving any indicators related to government performance or the performance of ministries, in order to uncover cases of corruption or negligence.
