MP Hamid al-Moussawi confirmed on Monday that the ongoing disputes between the two Kurdish parties regarding the presidency have placed Parliament in a constitutional impasse. He stressed that the only remaining option for MPs is to resort to a national process to resolve this issue through a direct vote, bypassing partisan agreements.
Al-Moussawi told the Information Agency that “the lack of Kurdish consensus on a single presidential candidate has disrupted parliamentary sessions and exceeded the constitutional deadlines for this process.” He added, “Parliament cannot remain hostage to partisan disputes; therefore, the only available option is to pursue a national process where MPs have the freedom to vote.”
He further stated that “this approach will give all parliamentary blocs the opportunity to choose the candidate they deem suitable, free from political or partisan pressures.” He noted that “going to a national process reflects Parliament’s commitment to upholding the constitution and preventing the continuation of the political deadlock.”
Al-Moussawi pointed out that “obstructing the election of a president negatively impacts the formation of the new government and exacerbates the suffering of the people,” stressing that “the next phase requires bold decisions from parliamentarians to resolve this issue and prevent the country from falling into a constitutional vacuum.”
He concluded by saying that “the Badr Bloc believes that resorting to a national framework is the only realistic solution if the Kurdish dispute continues, because the presidency is a fundamental constitutional entitlement that cannot tolerate further delay.”
