The former MP, Amir al-Maamouri, called on Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi on Saturday to launch an urgent investigation into state-owned properties, asserting that political parties and figures exert significant control over this sector.
Al-Maamouri stated in a statement obtained by Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the state-owned properties file requires a comprehensive and immediate review due to the illegal exploitation by some influential entities.”
He added that “a number of political parties and figures are using these properties for money laundering and to achieve narrow, self-serving gains.”
Al-Maamouri emphasized “the importance of the Prime Minister taking decisive steps to recover state-owned properties and hold those involved in their misappropriation accountable.”
It is worth noting that the real estate sector is the largest conduit for money laundering, handling an annual volume of 100 billion dinars in cash. This sector launders 70% of illicit funds domestically and 30% internationally. These operations cause prices to inflate three to four times, with the price per square meter reaching $16,000, amidst an 85% reliance on cash payments before the digital transformation. To conceal their identities, a single network registers up to 50 properties under aliases, embedded in investment projects and residential complexes with a total estimated value of $300 billion.
