The head of the Bayariq Al-Khair Party, Muhammad Othman, confirmed today, Tuesday, that there is no Sunni consensus so far on the candidate for the position of Speaker of Parliament, while indicating that the dome of the House of Representatives will decide the matter.
Al-Khalidi told Al-Maalouma, “The Sunni political forces are still different about agreeing on one or two candidates to compete for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives to succeed the sacked Muhammad Al-Halbousi,” pointing out that “the dispute continues between those forces and that the decision will be under the dome of Parliament.”
He added, “The meetings and bilateral meetings between the Sunni forces did not resolve any consensus despite the approaching first session of the legislative term of the House of Representatives, in which it is hoped that a vote on a new speaker of Parliament will be settled, as stated in the constitution.”
He pointed out, “The differences are almost deep between the political forces due to the Taqadum Party insisting on being an alternative to it as it is the largest Sunni bloc, but the other political forces do not want that.”
It is noteworthy that the House of Representatives will begin holding the first session of the new legislative term on the ninth of this month.
The Federal Supreme Court had decided, earlier, to terminate the membership of the ousted Speaker of the House of Representatives, Muhammad al-Halbousi, based on a forgery lawsuit filed by Representative Laith al-Dulaimi.
