Former MP Mohammed al-Khalidi confirmed on Wednesday that the newly created deputy prime minister positions are not free of charge, and questioned the justifications for this move.
Speaking to Al-Maalouma, al-Khalidi explained that “Iraq is going through a severe financial crisis, amidst difficult regional circumstances, which has directly impacted its economy, heavily reliant on oil exports.” He added, “In light of this crisis, four deputy prime minister positions are being created, which raises many questions.”
He further stated, “There is no veto on the identities of the nominated individuals, but creating these positions during the current crisis raises many questions, even among the public.” He emphasized that “the claim that these positions do not cost the treasury is inaccurate, as they require offices, allowances, and financial expenditures, and will ultimately burden the treasury.”
He concluded, “The principle of free service is neither present nor accurate from our perspective.”
