The founder of the popular campaign against corruption, Hussein al-Karawi, affirmed on Saturday that anti-corruption efforts will not achieve tangible results unless they include pursuing the political entities behind corruption networks and holding their supporters accountable. Al-Karawi told the Information Agency that “combating corruption is not limited to pursuing low-level employees, but requires striking at the political sources that have provided protection for the corrupt and contributed to entrenching corruption within state institutions.”
He added that “activating deterrent laws, foremost among them the ‘Where did you get this?’ law, represents an important step in holding senior politicians and officials accountable for their wealth amassed at the expense of public funds.”
He pointed out that “there are political figures and officials who have become illicitly wealthy from public funds and have played a role in bringing some corrupt figures to decision-making positions.”
He called for “a comprehensive review of senior administrative positions and the replacement of directors general and undersecretaries who have been appointed for two years or more, in accordance with the requirements of administrative reform and combating corruption.”
He stressed that “restoring citizens’ trust in state institutions requires genuine and bold measures targeting corrupt individuals, regardless of their positions or the entities behind them.”
