Former member of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Water, Thaer al-Jubouri, confirmed on Friday that the Mosul Dam’s water storage is approaching five billion cubic meters for the first time in years. He also noted that the country’s water situation has improved significantly in less than a week due to the heavy rains and floods at the end of March.
Speaking to Al-Maalomah news agency, al-Jubouri explained that “the water storage in the Mosul Dam is approaching five billion cubic meters, whereas at this time last year it was up to 60% lower.” He added that “this represents a remarkable increase and revitalization of a strategic reservoir located on the Tigris River basin.”
He further stated that “the water situation in Iraq has improved considerably during the heavy rains and floods at the end of March, within a short period of time,” pointing out that “five to six important dams are currently experiencing a large influx of water in the north, east, and west of the country.”
Al-Jubouri indicated that “the picture will be clearer regarding the amount of water flowing into the dams after the expected wave of rain and floods over the past two days,” stressing that “Iraq was in dire need of this rain to replenish the dams and groundwater.”
