On Monday, MP Ibtisam al-Hilali, a leading figure in the State of Law Coalition, confirmed that three of the most prominent leaders of the Coordination Framework had decided to support Nouri al-Maliki, the head of the State of Law Coalition, as the sole candidate for Prime Minister in the next government.
Al-Hilali told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the head of the National Wisdom Movement, Mr. Ammar al-Hakim, the head of the Badr Organization, Hadi al-Amiri, and the Secretary-General of the Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq Movement, Sheikh Qais al-Khazali, have definitively agreed to support al-Maliki’s nomination for the next government,” indicating that “this support will be officially announced during the meeting of the leaders of the Coordination Framework scheduled to be held this evening.”
She added that “Maliki visited Mr. Ammar al-Hakim yesterday at his residence, where they discussed developments in the political scene and the issue of forming the next government,” noting that “al-Hakim informed Maliki during the meeting of his full support for his nomination.”
She added that “Al-Amiri and Al-Khazali also conveyed their clear position within the framework of supporting Al-Maliki to assume the premiership,” stressing that “the joint declaration of support will be officially issued following a meeting on Monday evening.”
A source close to the Coordination Framework had previously revealed that a crucial meeting would be held today to discuss and decide on the prime ministerial candidate within the framework’s constituent forces.
