The Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Hebat al-Halbousi, reiterated on Saturday Baghdad’s support for the recent memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran as a prelude to reaching a comprehensive peace agreement in the region, while condemning the attacks launched by Tehran against Arab countries despite regional and international calls for de-escalation.
Al-Halbousi said in a speech he delivered during the eighth conference of the Arab Parliament and the heads of Arab councils and parliaments held in the Egyptian capital, Cairo: “We cannot ignore the security and political challenges facing our Arab nation, foremost among them the continued attacks and violations targeting the sovereignty of Arab countries and the security of their peoples.”
He added that “the Republic of Iraq renews its firm position in condemning the attacks carried out by Israel against the Palestinian people, and on Syrian and Lebanese territories,” stressing Baghdad’s rejection of “Iranian attacks that violate the sovereignty of Arab countries and threaten their security and stability,” calling for an immediate halt to these attacks and violations.
