The head of the National State Forces Alliance, Ammar al-Hakim, confirmed on Saturday that the coordinating framework that brings together the ruling Shiite political forces in Iraq has chosen nine candidates for the premiership, while stressing the importance of restricting weapons to the state in accordance with a solution that takes into account the previous circumstances.
During a speech at the Baghdad Diwan for Political and Social Elites, Al-Hakim stated that “Iraq is experiencing a clear recovery, manifested in the end of the tasks of the international coalition and the United Nations mission, as well as the success of the electoral process in terms of procedures, transparency, and the smooth announcement of results, with broad participation that carried the message of concentrating the electoral vote in specific forces within the constituent arenas.”
He pointed out that “the election of the Speaker of Parliament and his two deputies came in accordance with the principle of prior understanding and consultation,” stressing that there is a political desire to shorten the constitutional periods in order to accumulate achievements.
He explained that “the coordination framework asked the candidates for the premiership to present their priorities and programs for addressing the challenges and their work teams, which led to the development of a broad vision on the basis of which nine candidates were chosen,” considering this an expression of the maturity of the Iraqi political experience, and stressing that this approach has received regional and international understanding.
Al-Hakim explained that “the next challenge is the economic aspect, especially with regard to the fluctuations in oil prices,” considering that “the crisis is short-term and constitutes a real opportunity for economic reforms, despite its difficulty in its early stages.”
He also stressed “the importance of restricting weapons to the state in accordance with a balanced Iraqi approach that takes into account the previous circumstances, and in cooperation with the elected government with full powers and within international guarantees and political participation.”
Al-Hakim called on the elites to provide creative and realistic solutions to the challenges, stressing that reform is an indispensable option, with the importance of passing strategic laws that require a two-thirds majority, and strengthening dialogue and understanding between political blocs to form the government.
He also called for empowering competent individuals in government positions through specialized committees, supporting the private sector and small projects instead of expanding appointments, and paying attention to the rights of people with disabilities, stressing the importance of the constitution as a comprehensive reference, and emphasizing Iraq’s endeavor to play a proactive role in supporting the stability of the region.
