On Friday, Mohammed al-Fahdawi, a leader in the Azm Alliance, warned of pressures he said the United States was exerting on Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zidi to influence the selection of members of the new cabinet.

Al-Fahdawi told Al-Maalouma that “the most prominent challenges facing Al-Zidi are the American interference in the mechanism for selecting his government team, and the use of the veto against figures who oppose American influence in Iraq,” noting that “this may hinder the completion of the formation of the government within the specified timeframes.”

He added that “the Trump administration is seeking to form a government that takes into account Washington’s interests in Iraq, stressing that there is rejection by political and parliamentary forces of the American intervention policy.”

Al-Fahdawi added that “the US administration may oppose the new government if it does not align with Washington’s policies,” noting that “support for al-Zaidi came with well-known conditions.”
