Abdul Sattar Ahmed al-Dulaimi, a leader in the United Anbar Alliance, revealed on Wednesday that there is near-unanimity among Sunni and Shia factions to endorse Nouri al-Maliki, the candidate of the Coordination Framework, for the premiership.
Al-Dulaimi told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “Sunni and Shia political activity has led to a near-consensus on choosing Nouri al-Maliki, the Coordination Framework’s candidate, for prime minister. This was done in coordination with most Shia blocs and parties, and the Kurds were approached to reach a consensus on al-Maliki’s candidacy after Shia forces insisted on not replacing him with another figure, as requested by the Trump administration.”
He added that “the Sunni National Council is awaiting the outcome of the Coordination Framework’s discussions regarding the selection of the prime minister, as they remain committed to their candidate, Nouri al-Maliki. So far, the Progress Alliance, the Kurdistan Democratic Party, and some Shia forces have not reached an agreement to vote for al-Maliki’s nomination.” He explained that “discussions on forming the new government are ongoing, in an atmosphere free from previous disagreements regarding the mechanism for agreeing on the next prime minister.”
