Member of the United Anbar Alliance, Muhammad al-Dhari, revealed on Friday that a new Sunni political bloc is close to being formed in Iraq, independent of the head of the Azm Alliance, Muthanna al-Samarrai.
Al-Dhari indicated in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency that “the meeting that brought together the head of the Progress Alliance, Muhammad al-Halbousi, and a number of leaders of the Islamic Party and political, tribal and religious figures resulted in an agreement to establish the new bloc, which will be officially announced in the next few days after waiting to allow the opportunity for political figures from different alliances to join.”
He explained that “this step aims to isolate al-Samarrai from the Sunni alliances,” stressing that “the first meeting to form the bloc will be followed by a series of subsequent meetings in the coming days in light of the escalating disputes between al-Halbousi and al-Samarrai.”
He added that “the formation of the new bloc could lead to significant changes in the Sunni understandings within the National Council and may contribute to its disintegration after the failure of all previous attempts to bring the various factions together.”
