On Monday, MP Mohammed al-Bayati raised three key questions about Iraq’s financial situation in light of recent regional developments.
Speaking to Al-Maalouma, al-Bayati stated, “Iraq relies on crude oil exports for over 90% of its revenue to secure its financial income and support the public treasury. This reality has become increasingly difficult amidst recent events.” He added, “The financial picture in the country is extremely unclear, and there are no satisfactory or convincing answers so far, either from the Ministry of Finance or the government, to provide a clear understanding of the nature of the financial crisis.”
He further stated, “A number of official requests and letters have been submitted to the government and the Ministry of Finance seeking a detailed and accurate statement on the financial situation in light of recent developments, but we have not received any positive response to date.” He concluded, “This raises three main questions.”
He explained that “the most prominent of these signs is the extent of the damage inflicted on Iraq as a result of its inability to export approximately four million barrels of oil per day, in addition to the impact this has on the salaries file, especially since about 60% of the public treasury goes towards covering the salaries of state employees and other obligations,” questioning “the mechanisms for bridging this gap if this situation continues for a longer period.”
Al-Bayati stressed that “these points require clear and explicit answers from the government, particularly the Ministry of Finance, to clarify the truth to the public,” noting that “the Parliament is pressing for a thorough understanding of the nature of the financial crisis and its repercussions, in order to take appropriate measures to correct the course.”
