On Saturday, MP Mohammed al-Bayati confirmed that he had submitted a formal request to the caretaker government and the Iraqi Ministry of Finance to prepare a comprehensive assessment of the country’s financial situation, supported by figures and facts.
Al-Bayati told the Information Agency that “the financial file will be a top priority for the next government, especially since Iraq has been affected by the events unfolding in the Arabian Gulf, which have impacted its ability to export more than 90% of its crude oil.” He explained that “a formal request has been submitted to the caretaker government and the Ministry of Finance to prepare a comprehensive assessment that answers many questions related to the financial situation.”
He added that “the next phase requires an exceptional effort to correct the course of financial and economic action and to transition to a phase that adopts a strategy that reduces the economy’s reliance on oil exports alone,” noting “the importance of developing other sectors capable of providing resources for the general budget and reducing dependence on oil.”
He emphasized that “markets are experiencing volatility, coupled with the impact of international and regional instability on prices, necessitating greater flexibility to achieve financial stability and prevent any repercussions that might push the country to rely on loans, which over time turn into accumulated debt that burdens the budget.”
