MP Ahmed al-Asadi, from the Sadiqun parliamentary bloc, confirmed on Wednesday that corruption has exhausted the country and caused the collapse of several vital sectors, explaining that its repercussions have affected industry, investment, and infrastructure.
Al-Asadi told Al-Maalouma that “corruption in Iraq has exhausted the country and caused collapses in a number of sectors, including industry, investment, and other sectors and infrastructure.”
He added that “Parliament will work to activate its oversight role, hold those responsible accountable, and monitor and follow up on the Prime Minister’s anti-corruption campaign,” stressing that addressing corruption is essential to stop further collapses in vital sectors and support state institutions.
Earlier, the Prime Minister’s Judicial Advisor, Munir Haddad, confirmed that Iraq’s losses from 2003 to 2026 exceeded $2 trillion, or more than $2,000 billion, with an average of approximately $87 billion annually.
Conversely, funds smuggled abroad are estimated at between $150 billion and $250 billion, representing approximately 7.5% to 12.5% of the total estimated losses.
