The head of the “Reconstruction and Development” bloc, Bahaa al-Araji, suggested on Saturday that the parliamentary session dedicated to electing the president of the republic would likely go to a second round, while noting that the coordination framework had not yet decided on its candidate for the position of prime minister.

Al-Araji told Shafaq News Agency that “the session to elect the President of the Republic is still ongoing and has not ended, and it may go to a second round to elect the President of the Republic,” indicating that “the coordination framework has not yet decided on its candidate for the position of Prime Minister.”

For his part, the head of the “Sadiqun” parliamentary bloc, Uday Awad, said during a press conference he held in the parliament building that “the issue of the Prime Minister is a decision of the framework, and the assignment of any person must be with the approval of the majority of the framework’s leaders.”

He added that “the Sadiqun bloc is attending the session to elect the president of the republic in order to end the political deadlock, and the bloc has fulfilled its obligation to attend previous sessions,” calling on “all political blocs to bear the national responsibility and complete the important entitlement in a way that ensures strengthening confidence in the constitutional institution.”

The Iraqi parliament began its session today to vote on a new president for the country, amid objections from some political forces due to the lack of consensus that usually precedes important and sensitive sessions.

The Iraqi parliament began its session today to vote on a new president for the country, amid objections from some political forces due to the lack of consensus that usually precedes important and sensitive sessions.

Iraq has exceeded the constitutional deadline by about 70 days, while 148 days have passed without the formation of a new government in a political impasse that has continued since the legislative elections in October 2025.

Speaker of Parliament Hebat al-Halbousi called on the heads of blocs and MPs to attend the session and proceed with completing the constitutional requirements, threatening to reveal the names of absent MPs and the parties that are obstructing its convening, in an attempt to secure the necessary quorum.

But this call was met with successive boycott announcements, as the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the State of Law Coalition, in addition to other blocs, announced their non-attendance, considering that proceeding with the election without a prior political understanding represents a violation of the principle of partnership, before the Azm Alliance joined them, linking its participation to an agreement within the coordination framework.

In contrast, other blocs affirmed their commitment to holding the session on schedule, including the State Forces Alliance, the Progress Party, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, the Sadiqun Bloc, as well as the Turkmen Front.
