Mukhtar al-Moussawi, a member of parliament from the Badr bloc led by Hadi al-Amiri, confirmed on Monday that the anti-corruption campaign led by the Iraqi government “will include everyone,” noting that “American support” contributed to the success of this operation and the exposure of corrupt individuals.
Al-Moussawi told Shafaq News Agency: “We are with Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi to recover public funds and we support him in this process,” considering that those accused in corruption cases possess groups that could have stirred up chaos and mobilized the street with the money in their possession, and that American support contributed to the success of the operation and the exposure of the corrupt.
The member of the parliamentary foreign relations committee pointed out that other countries, including neighboring countries, benefit from the presence of Iraqi funds in their banks, stressing that there is cooperation to recover wanted persons who are outside Iraq.
Earlier today, Iraqi government spokesman Haider al-Aboudi confirmed that the government is continuing its fight against corruption and protecting public funds, noting that 21 people involved in Operation Dawn Charge had been arrested.
According to sources who spoke to Shafaq News Agency, the authorities have begun implementing arrest warrants against those accused in cases related to public funds, while working to complete legal procedures, including a request to lift the immunity of some of those involved, with expectations that the prosecutions will extend to figures located outside Iraq through international cooperation and the recovery of funds suspected of having been smuggled abroad.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi confirmed during a cabinet meeting on Sunday that the campaign represents a “first phase” in the fight against corruption, pledging to continue procedures to recover public funds, and tasking oversight bodies with receiving any indicators related to government performance or the performance of ministries to uncover cases of corruption or negligence.
In the same context, the leader of the Shiite National Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, praised the campaign, describing it as a “heroic reform campaign,” calling for a peaceful demonstration after next Friday’s prayers in support of the government’s measures, and considering that it has restored hope to Iraqis after years of corruption’s dominance.
The Federal Integrity Commission stated that the arrest warrants are being carried out in accordance with the law and under the supervision of the judiciary. According to judicial sources, the investigation data indicates that new files will continue to be opened that may affect other figures in the coming period, as part of efforts to recover public funds and prosecute those involved inside and outside Iraq.
Government sources also confirmed to Shafaq News Agency that the campaign will continue in the coming days, while political assessments indicate that its results may have a wide impact on the balance of power within Parliament and political blocs, especially if the investigations result in judicial convictions and the recovery of large sums of money for the benefit of the state treasury.
