The Victory Coalition, led by former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, confirmed on Monday the success of the Coordination Framework forces and political blocs in ending the controversy surrounding the positions of deputy prime ministers by definitively abstaining from them, in response to parliamentary demands calling for rationalizing government spending.

Coalition spokesman Aqeel al-Rudaini told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the agreement to abolish the positions of deputy prime ministers came in accordance with parliamentary demands that considered these positions unnecessary and a burden on the state’s structure, especially in light of the severe financial crisis the country is currently experiencing.”

He added that “the decision to abolish the positions of deputy prime ministers contributed directly to rearranging the equation for distributing the remaining ministerial portfolios among the blocs,” indicating that “one of the sovereign service ministries of category (A) will be calculated with the equivalent of 20 parliamentary seats, while another portfolio will be calculated with the equivalent of 12 seats.”

He indicated that “the coming days will witness high-level coordination with the remaining political components and partners to formulate a final consensus, paving the way for the successive presentation of the candidates’ names within the House of Representatives to obtain a vote of confidence.”
