On Thursday, the leader of the Shiite National Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, demanded stricter control over the markets of Najaf Governorate, following the discovery of pork in a butcher shop, and threatened to take action if his demand was not met.
Al-Sadr said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, “Najaf is the capital of Shiism in the entire world… and there is no doubt about that. Hence, no actions should be taken that offend this holy city… and we specifically mention the market and the legal and health violations that occur in it.”
Al-Sadr recommended activating “strict” control over markets, restaurants, shops, butchers, and all other products that “must comply with Sharia and health rules, and if this is not done, we will take a stand.”
He called for “women working in public transportation to wear the hijab, especially on Iraqi planes heading to Najaf and its airport.”
He stressed the prohibition of prohibited goods, as well as food and drink, “and everything that violates the normalization law, and even heavenly and human laws.”
He added: “I also absolutely forbid any use of the Al-Sadr family’s images in all commercial fields, as this is inappropriate and demeaning to us, the Al-Sadr family. If we do not see a response, we will take the necessary action.”
On Tuesday, a security source in Najaf told Shafaq News Agency that a butcher who hunted wild boars and sold them to citizens as “minced meat” had been arrested.
He explained that an intelligence security team arrested the owner of a butcher shop who was hunting wild boars in the Al-Hurriya district of Kufa and selling them to citizens as “minced meat” in the central area of Najaf city.
