All eyes are on the Iraqi Parliament as the legislative recess draws to a close, amid assurances from members of parliament that there is momentum to pass pending legislation and activate both the legislative and oversight roles. This is expected to contribute to supporting the government’s program and addressing long-standing issues that have been awaited resolution. Regarding the legislation of pending laws, MP Hussein Shaker confirmed that Parliament will work to enact important legislation after the recess ends, stressing the need to avoid repeating the political disputes that paralyzed the legislative body in previous sessions.
Shaker told Al-Maalouma that the coming period will witness action to pass priority laws, in line with the requirements of the current phase and the needs of citizens. He called on political blocs to overcome the disagreements that have affected the parliament’s performance in recent years.
He added that the success of Parliament requires focusing on completing pending legislation and avoiding the political wrangling that has hindered the passage of many important laws.
Shaker pointed out that a number of laws are still awaiting finalization, including the Popular Mobilization Forces Law, the Oil and Gas Law, amendments to the Land Ownership Law, and the Federal Supreme Court Law, stressing that their passage requires political consensus and prioritizing the national interest. Regarding strengthening parliamentary oversight, MP Hamza al-Khafaji affirmed that activating the oversight and legislative role of the House of Representatives is a fundamental priority in the coming phase, emphasizing the importance of monitoring the performance of government institutions and supporting the government program.
Al-Khafaji explained that parliamentary committees will work to intensify oversight of the performance of ministries and institutions to ensure improved services for citizens and increased efficiency in government performance.
He added that the next phase requires expediting the enactment of laws that address economic, service, and security challenges, in addition to monitoring the progress of government projects and plans to ensure their implementation according to the specified timelines.
He emphasized that integration between the legislative and executive branches is one of the most important factors in achieving political stability and advancing development and reform across various sectors.
