Former MP Wael Abdul Latif confirmed on Tuesday that the current financial indicators raise many questions about the size of government spending and the mechanisms for managing public funds, noting that talk of declining financial balances despite large oil revenues necessitates opening transparent and professional investigations to reveal the facts to the public.

Abdul Latif told Al-Maalomah News Agency, “Iraq has achieved huge oil revenues in recent years, estimated at hundreds of billions of dollars, but the continuation of service and economic crises and the rise in poverty and unemployment rates raise legitimate questions about the fate of those funds and the extent of their impact on the lives of citizens.”

He added that “issuing arrest warrants against officials and figures who held senior positions in the state reveals the existence of large corruption files that are still being investigated,” warning that “failure to hold those involved truly accountable may open the door to a repeat of previous corruption experiences that caused serious damage to the national economy.”

He pointed out that “corruption in Iraq is no longer individual cases, but has sometimes turned into networks and overlapping interests that benefit from political and partisan protection, which has hindered anti-corruption efforts for many years,” stressing that “the current stage requires the application of the law to everyone without exception or discrimination.”

He stressed that “state funds belong to the Iraqi people and not to officials or parties,” calling for “directing revenues towards service and development projects and supporting the poor, needy, and unemployed segments of society instead of wasting them or exploiting them in illegal ways.”

He concluded by saying that “uncovering corruption files and holding those responsible accountable represents a real test of the seriousness of state institutions in protecting public funds and preventing a repeat of what was previously known as the theft of the century or any other such cases.”

It is worth noting that the continued opening of corruption cases and the referral of those involved to the judiciary is an important step in strengthening citizens’ trust in oversight institutions at a time when the public is awaiting the results of the ongoing investigations and the concrete measures they will produce to protect public funds and establish the principle of accountability without exception.
