MP Qusay Abbas ruled out on Sunday holding a parliamentary session to elect the president of the republic without a final agreement among the Kurdish forces, stressing that the position among the Kurdish parties remains “ambiguous” regarding the selection of the appropriate candidate for the position.
Abbas told the Information Agency that “proceeding with fulfilling the constitutional requirements necessitates a prior agreement between the two Kurdish blocs to overcome the current political deadlock,” explaining that “holding a session without a unified vision will not contribute to resolving the issue but will only further complicate the situation.”
He added that “the Kurdish forces must recognize their national responsibility and decide on their candidate as soon as possible,” noting that “delaying this entitlement hinders the formation of the new government and negatively impacts the functioning of the country’s institutions.”
Abbas called on the Kurdish parties to “overcome partisan differences and prioritize the public interest to complete the building of the state’s constitutional structures,” emphasizing that “parliament is awaiting Kurdish consensus to set a date for the final session and decide on the presidency.”
