A member of the political bureau of the Supreme Islamic Council, Amin al-Ghazi, revealed on Wednesday (April 15, 2026) the outlines of the division within the coordination framework regarding the selection of the next prime minister.
Al-Ghazi explained in a press statement that “the framework is still divided into two main teams, one of which supports the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki for reasons related to its political vision, while the other team believes that the country’s interest requires renewing the term of the current Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia al-Sudani.”
He added that this sharp difference between the two visions could lead to the disruption of passing either option, which opens the door to introducing a third option, namely a “compromise candidate,” to get out of the crisis.
He pointed out that this option may be the most likely in the next stage, especially given the need to end the political deadlock and proceed with completing the constitutional requirements.
Al-Ghazi concluded by saying that the general trend may lean towards proposing a new figure, from outside the names currently circulating, as a compromise solution that can gain the acceptance of the various parties within the coordination framework.
Disagreements continue within the Coordination Framework forces regarding the decision on the position of Prime Minister, amid a clear division between the forces supporting renewal and others pushing for the return of the previous figures, which deepens the state of political deadlock and delays the resolution of constitutional entitlements.
