A government source reported on Wednesday evening that all electronic financial payment outlets across the Iraqi governorates have stopped, leading to the disruption of salary payments to employees, retirees, and beneficiaries of social protection networks through distribution outlets.
The source told Shafaq News Agency that “a sudden technical malfunction affected the electronic payment system, causing all outlets to stop carrying out withdrawal and disbursement operations in various governorates, coinciding with the continued distribution of employee salaries.”
He added that “the specialized technical teams have begun working to diagnose the fault and restore service as quickly as possible,” without specifying the cause of the malfunction or a date for the full resumption of work.
The shutdown led to overcrowding of citizens in front of payment outlets after withdrawals could not be completed, amid anticipation of the system being restarted and salaries being disbursed again.
As of the time of writing this news, neither official authorities nor electronic payment companies have issued a statement explaining the reasons for the outage or its duration.
