A source close to the National Political Council revealed on Monday the reasons that prompted Mohammed al-Halbousi to withdraw his candidacy for the position of Speaker of Parliament.
The source told Al-Maalouma that “the National Political Council’s recent meeting, held yesterday evening in Baghdad and including representatives of Sunni political forces, concluded that there was a real difficulty in securing Mohammed al-Halbousi’s nomination for Speaker of Parliament, given the refusal of influential political forces to support him for this position.”
The source added that “al-Halbousi initially expressed his refusal to withdraw at the beginning of the meeting, but the second part of the meeting saw him given the freedom to choose a suitable alternative, leading to the nomination of Heiba al-Halbousi.” The source noted that “the head of the Azm Alliance rejected this option, confirming his continued candidacy for the position of Speaker of Parliament.”
The source indicated that “Mohammed al-Halbousi’s loss of the parliamentary speakership is a significant blow and could later lead to fragmentation or splits within the bloc, given the position’s crucial role in its political structure.” The source added that “the lack of support from the majority of members of the Progress Alliance came as a surprise, and reactions are expected to become clearer in the next two days.”
