A source close to the Coordination Framework indicated on Sunday that the Framework is likely to officially announce today the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition, as its candidate for the next prime minister, following the withdrawal of Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, head of the Reconstruction and Development Bloc, from the race.
The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, told the Information Agency that “in-depth discussions took place between Maliki and al-Sudani over the past few days, culminating in the latter’s official withdrawal from the race for prime minister in favor of Maliki.”
The source added that “al-Sudani’s withdrawal before the Coordination Framework removes any obstacles to Maliki assuming the position for a third time,” suggesting that the Framework will officially inform the political forces of the candidate of the largest bloc.
It is worth noting that Nouri al-Maliki has previously served as prime minister twice and is known for his extensive international and regional connections, in addition to his good relations with various Iraqi political factions.
