Independent Kurdish politician Didar Haval revealed on Friday that the sale of unofficial border crossings with Turkey and Syria to smuggling networks dealing in petroleum products and foodstuffs is being carried out in complete secrecy and under the supervision of Masoud Barzani.
Haval told the Information Agency, “Masoud Barzani’s government has opened a market for selling unofficial border crossings with Turkey and Syria to smugglers of petroleum products and foodstuffs for huge sums of money, away from the eyes of the federal government, while the ruling family retains other crossings which it uses as financial resources to support the Kurdistan Democratic Party.”
He added that “the process of opening unofficial border crossings for sale to smugglers of oil derivatives and food is being carried out in complete secrecy, and its details cannot be disclosed. It is being overseen by those close to Barzani.” He further stated that “the sale of several unofficial border crossings to oil derivative smugglers is a dangerous precedent that requires an urgent investigation into what is happening in the management of the border crossings, the parties behind it, and the referral of those manipulating the system to the judiciary.”
