Al-Maalomah/Baghdad –
On Saturday, MP Mukhtar al-Youssef, from the Badr parliamentary bloc, revealed a “suspicious movement” behind the call for Monday’s session. He confirmed that the State of Law Coalition and other forces withdrew their signatures from the session’s quorum to thwart an attempt to secure a second term for Mohammed Shia al-Sudani “outside the framework” of the Coordination Framework agreements.
Al-Youssef told Al-Maalomah News Agency, “The sudden announcement of Monday’s session to elect the president and appoint the prime minister revealed a conspiracy led by the Progress and Reconstruction and Development blocs to overturn the Coordination Framework’s decision to appoint Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition.”
He added, “This move prompted the State of Law Coalition and several other political forces within the Coordination Framework to immediately withdraw their signatures to foil this political maneuver.” He indicated that “the session will not achieve the required quorum in light of these withdrawals.”
Al-Youssef called on the forces within the Coordination Framework to “finalize and definitively decide on the name of the final candidate before the session, in order to thwart attempts by some blocs to circumvent the process and impose external agendas that disregard the electoral process and political consensus.”
