A leader in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Ghiath al-Surji, confirmed on Tuesday that the official signing of the alliance with the New Generation Movement will take place soon, within the next few days. He explained that the delay in signing this new alliance was due to the travel of PUK leader Bafel Talabani.
Al-Surji told the Information Agency, “Our anticipated alliance with the New Generation Movement, in addition to the Christian quota, will allow us to have equal seats with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), with our bloc and the KDP each holding 39 seats.”
He added, “The new alliance will give us negotiating power that will guarantee an equal division of government positions in the Kurdistan Region,” clarifying that “the PUK, under this balance, will obtain either the presidency of the region or the premiership of the government.”
