On Friday, one of the berths at the northern port of Umm Qasr officially became operational, receiving its first ship, in a move that embodies a qualitative leap in the capabilities of Iraqi ports and strengthens their position on the regional and international maritime transport map.

Mohammed Taher, assistant director of the Umm Qasr North Port, told Shafaq News Agency that “the new berth, which is part of the berths project, was designed with advanced technical specifications, as it is 550 meters long and has a draft of up to 18 meters, which allows it to receive the longest container ships in the world, with a capacity of 25,000 containers.”

Taher added that “the dock is equipped with 4 giant cranes with a loading capacity of up to 100 tons per crane, capable of handling one 40-foot container or two 20-foot containers at the same time.”

He added, “The project is equipped with the latest technological systems, as the cranes rely on smart technologies that enable them to read the ship’s profile and deal with it automatically according to their operating system, which ensures speed and accuracy of handling operations, and is in line with international standards adopted in advanced ports.”

For his part, the project’s executive director, Mohammed Demirji, told Shafaq News Agency that “the first berth within the new port berths project received the MSC global ship, which is 366 meters long and carries 14,000 containers, of which 2,800 containers were allocated to the Umm Qasr port, and which mostly contain consumer goods intended for the local market.”

He added, “The global ship was docked at Hamad Port in the United Arab Emirates, while the unloading of containers took place according to advanced global mechanisms that rely on programmed cranes that are directly integrated with the ship’s systems.”
