Burhan Sheikh Raouf, a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), confirmed that his party has high hopes of securing the presidency through national consensus and a vote by parliamentarians for the PUK candidate, Nizar Amidi, after failing to reach agreements regarding the position.
Sheikh Raouf told Al-Maalouma, “Agreements are still lacking between the PUK and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) regarding the presidency for the next phase in Iraq.”
He added, “The formation of the regional government has been significantly delayed, which is not a new issue, but today the federal government must be formed, constitutional requirements fulfilled, and all presidential and ministerial positions filled.”
He explained that “Parliament will have its say and will vote for the presidential candidates, and the PUK has high hopes that parliamentarians will vote for its candidate, Nizar Amidi, for the presidency. Therefore, the PUK has a strong chance of securing the position again.”
