On Sunday, Abdul Samad al-Zarkoushi, a member of the Coordination Framework, called for a delay in the weapons control process, given the three challenges surrounding the Iraqi situation.
Speaking to Al-Maalouma, al-Zarkoushi explained that “the weapons control process is a crucial task that directly impacts the security and stability of the country, and it must be carried out in a stable and secure environment, free from any challenges. However, in the current situation, there are three direct challenges: the regional situation and its tensions, the vulnerability of some border crossings with neighboring countries, and the foreign presence and its movements.”
He added, “We are in an exceptional situation, which necessitates a delay in the weapons control process in all its forms, while taking into account the tensions in the region and the activity of some terrorist movements that are trying to regroup and undermine the security and stability of the country.”
He emphasized that “this delay in the weapons control process stems from an objective view of the nature of the regional and international landscape and its challenges. We are not yet out of danger, and the presence of weapons is extremely important for strengthening security and stability. Therefore, any step in this direction must be carefully considered and in accordance with developments in the internal situation and the regional and international environment.”
