Wafa Mohammed Karim, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), confirmed on Saturday that Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s visit to Baghdad is intended to reaffirm the political agreement reached during Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s visit to the region.
Karim stated that “the most prominent issues Barzani will discuss in Baghdad include the oil file and the region’s salaries,” as well as “the customs file and the ASYCUDA system, matters related to the disputed territories, and the implementation of Article 140 of the Constitution.”
He added that “Barzani will also seek guarantees during his visit to Baghdad concerning the oil fields and extraction companies operating in the region.”
The KDP member continued, “The Prime Minister’s visit encompasses political, economic, and security projects, and he will hold separate meetings with political leaders in Baghdad to ensure new understandings are reached and to begin a new phase of relations under al-Zaidi’s government, which the region views positively.”
The disputes between the central government and the Kurdistan Region have persisted for many years, as all parties have previously failed to reach solutions on outstanding issues, such as the oil file, which the region insists on managing unilaterally without consulting the central government, while simultaneously demanding financial entitlements from Baghdad. Another issue is the disputed territories, where the region attempts to exert its influence and control over vast areas and annex them to its administrative boundaries.
