Member of Parliament Ahmed Shaheed warned the caretaker government on Monday against continuing to impose, expand, or double taxes on citizens, stressing the need for good governance in tax collection that is proportionate to citizens’ income.
Shaheed told the Information Agency, “The taxes imposed by the government on goods and merchandise are borne directly by the citizen, as they are the consumers, since the merchant passes on these taxes to the prices of goods and merchandise.” He
added, “Raising taxes is not limited to goods and merchandise entering the country, but includes all transactions with ministries and government departments,” warning against “continuing to impose, diversify, or double taxes on citizens, especially those related to medicine and food.”
He pointed out that “the government, especially in its caretaker capacity, should prioritize the living and economic conditions of citizens and avoid burdening them with additional expenses through ill-conceived financial policies.”
It is worth noting that the caretaker government began doubling several taxes at the start of this year, leading to a market slowdown due to a significant increase in the prices of goods and commodities.
